City of St Albans Swimming Club’s A team won the Hertfordshire Major League 2014 on Saturday night in Hitchin.
The Hertfordshire swimming league was formed to ‘promote and encourage’ competition between swimming clubs affiliated to the Hertfordshire Amateur Swimming Association’ and this year did not disappoint.
After three rounds of competition, CoStA finished in first place overall ahead of atfield and Watford.
Head coach Stewart Melton said: “I am very proud of our swimmers and coaches for all of their hard work over the last three rounds. Congratulations to everyone on an incredible victory.
“The future certainly looks bright for CoStA Swimming Club.”
In an exciting night of swimming in the Southbury swimming centre, CoStA’s B team secured third place.
It could have been even better for CoStA as, after 12 races, they were separated from Cheshunt by a single point. The lead changed hands several times throughout the night, setting up a tense final.
If CoStA could win the Squadron relay and Cheshunt came fourth or lower St Albans would take second by the narrowest of margins. Adding to the tension, Tring put their fastest swimmers in first so the whole pool had a Hare to chase.
At halfway it was a melee of swimmers as Tring we gradually being overhauled by the field. CoStA and Cheshunt were neck and neck and it came down to the final few lengths of the final race. It was here that it perhaps a couple of swims too far and despite their efforts CoStA came fourth, losing out to Cheshunt in third.
