Bottom-club Staines recorded the first win of their London Two North West season after stunning Tabard RFC in a 20-8 win at Cobden Hill.

The Middlesex side were well-organised and fully deserved their win.

Harry Gough grabbed all eight of Tabard’s points, kicking a penalty before scoring a try.

Staines were ahead after just five minutes thanks to a penalty and only a strong Tabard defence prevented them from increasing that lead.

Joe Calnan and Jonny Aguila both went close before Gough levelled things up.

Tabard continued to be in the ascendancy but it was Staines who were to go into the break ahead.

With five minutes to go they found themselves inside the Tabard 22 and their loose-head prop barrelled over close to the posts for an 8-3 lead.

Both teams came out fast after the break, and it was the visitors who scored again after an amazing passage of play.

Calnan broke down his wing and with Staines closing in, he put in a deft kick behind the defensive line.

However it was swept up by the cover and passed out to the lively winger, who found no cover in front of him and scampered in to score in the corner.

He scored again with Tabard down to 14, captain Dan Calnan handed a yellow card by the referee. This time the conversion was good taking the score to 3-20 after 65mins.

With eight minutes to go Tabard pulled one back.

Replacement scrum-half Liam Glynn bullied his forwards to drive for the line, made a break himself and had the wherewithal to see Gough unmarked on the wing.

Glynn made no mistake and put Gough in to score in the corner.

Tabard kept pressing but the comeback was not to be and despite plenty of positives, the lack of a losing bonus point will be a disappointment.
