St Albans Striders had a successful race in Stevenage with several members walking away with Hertfordshire county medals around their necks.

More than 50 St Albans Striders took part in the annual 3km road relays round Fairlands Valley Park with the club fielding eight ladies’ teams of three runners doing 3km each, and six men’s teams of five ‘.

Striders’ top two ladies teams, made up of Lucy Waterlow, Wendy Walsh and Jenny Maddocks, and Judy Willits, Stacey Harris and Helen Cartlidge, took the top two positions in the veterans competition, gaining gold and silver county medals in the process.

Their cumulative times were 35 minutes seven seconds and 37 minutes 23 seconds respectively.

For the men, Paul Adams, Phillip Evans, Joe Dunn, Jamie Abiss and Si Fraser were fourth overall in the race with a combined time of 48.32.

That was good enough for first in the Hertfordshire County Championships however.

The men’s second team of Martin Whitworth, Andy Auld, Jonathan Scott, Gary Warren and club chair Graham Smith finished in 51:31, quick enough to be first place in the veterans competition and also gaining county medals for representing the club.

Closer to home, Wendy Walsh was the first ever lady winner at the successful launch of Heartwood Forest parkrun.

Her time was 20.51.

Caroline Bailes was second lady in 23:20. and Phillip Evans was fourth overall from the 151 finishers in a time of 17:57.

A further 13 Striders took part.

Elsewhere Jack Brooks successfully avoided running into any bears to complete the Juneau Marathon in Alaska in 4:29:12 before heading to Wrangell on Sunday to run another marathon.

Donna Irwin was third female at the Bury St Edmunds Focus Half Marathon, in a new PB of 1:44:07.

Martin Halling also ran, coming first in the MV60 category.

Ian Hirth was back to his typical marathon-running ways, albeit in a somewhat more challenging setting than usual.

He finished the Swiss Alpine K78 Marathon, incorporating 10,000ft of elevation, in 10 hours and 57 minutes.

And Anna Buckingham completed the Lakeland 50 mile ultra-marathon.
