ST ALBANS Striders won individual and team awards at the Stevenage Half Marathon on Sunday.

Paul Adams won the wet and windy race in 72:48 with Simon Riley second in 73:57.

Striders men also won the team event plus gold and bronze in the County team event and silver in the County veterans’ team event. Striders also won several County individual awards.

Finishers were Mark Castleton 78:38, Richard Harry 82:30, Colin Braybrook 83:10, Martin Whitworth 84:07, Stuart Middleton 90:51, Daniele Socci 94:45, Laura Hawkins 98:27, Richard Bentley 100:46, Andrew Maher 101:36, Howard Bull 101:57, Ian Nichol 102:28, Deidre Heydecker 103:31, John Hope 106:58, Jonathan Barrett 114:01, Tina Tremaine 121:47, Jonathan Milne 128:00.

• St Albans Athletic Club young athletes from all age-groups competed together with seniors from St Albans Striders in the National Cross Country relays in Mansfield at the weekend.

The St Albans Striders ladies team comprising Lucy Waterlow, Deborah Steer and Gill Jubb, finished 50th out of 102 teams, with the Striders’ ladies B team finishing 81st with Linda Powell, Vicky Wright and Deborah Steer again.

The junior men of James McMurray, Oliver Poulain and Chris Hilton finished a creditable 28th, with McMurray posting the fourth fastest time of the day of 8:56 over the 3km course.

The U15 girls fielded three teams with excellent performances by Tabitha Weddell, Alex Bentley, Georgia Robin and Jess Edwards.

The U13 boys and girls finished in the top half of the field. The girls celebrated two sub 9 minute runs over 2 km: Eleanor Hobbs of Marlborough School in 8.55 and Emily Anders in 8.36.

In the boys Callum Walsh had a successful run of 7.50 over the same distance. Conor McCallion of Verulam School made his debut on the cross country circuit at the Nationals with a great time of 8.15.

In the St Albans 5km Parkrun, Sam Pullan posted the fastest time of the day 16:29, beating the Striders veteran 40+ record for 5km in the process.

Jack Brooks completed his 300th marathon, in Raleigh, North Carolina over a hilly course finishing in 4:06:52.
