More than 80 St Albans Striders ran together against five other local clubs in the final scoring match of the 2017 Scott's Travel Mid Week Road Race League, in Chingford - and came home with the title for a staggering sixth successive season.

The final positions after the four scoring matches put the club first in the men’s competition and third in the women’s.

Put together gave the Striders the top division title.

The club also finished second in the veteran competition.

Mike Martin, the club’s men’s road race captain said: “This year the competition was very close but some fantastic performances on a tough course in Chingford helped finish the job off in style.

“It was a brilliant team effort to maintain our momentum throughout the race series.”

Leading the pack at Chingford was James McMurray who finished the 5.9 mile course in first place overall with a time of 31 minutes 46 seconds.

He was followed by Blake Vivian who came fourth in 33:19 and Steve Buckle sixth in 33:45.

For the ladies, Anna Ward was second in 38:23, with Charlotte Teare sixth in 41:15, followed by Wendy Walsh and Helen Cartlidge 12th and 13th with 42:48 and 42:50 respectively.

The results on the night meant that St Albans Striders finished just ahead of close rivals Orion Harriers, which is remarkable as it was Orion’s home fixture.

At the Southern Athletics League match in Luton, Andrew Maher ran the 3000m steeplechase in 15:02, Paul Adams the normal 3000m in 9:01 and Martin ran the 400m in 62 seconds.

Laura Hicks completed six events including 200m (35 secs) and 400m hurdles (1:23).

Wendy Walsh and Linda Powell ran the 5000m in 21:00 and 27:11 respectively.

Anna Ward and Emma Jardine were the top two ladies at the Hemel Hempstead 10K where Jim King was fourth overall.

In Ware, Fleur Harvey and Magda Bobon were fifth and sixth female in the 10K race.

In the parallel 10-mile event, father and son team Tony and Chris Barr ran 1:24 and 1:23.

Jonathan White ran 3K at the Fete du Velo, coming fourth overall.
