The big sports news for St Albans in 2015 is the launch of the first Festival of Sport for the city, which is to be staged in Verulamium Park on Sunday, September 13.

The Festival of Sport will have an incredible range of exciting events, including:

• 4 distances of Triathlon (which involve swimming cycling and running)

• 2 distances of Aquathlon (swim, run events)

• 2 Distances of Duathlon (run, bike, run events)

• 10k and 5k run races

• Scootathon for Kids

• 100k and 100 mile cycle events

The festival will include triathlons, aquathlons, duathlons, cycle events, 10K and 5K runs and a scootathon for kids. The festival has been very successfully staged in Welwyn Garden City for the past few years, where it has attracted over 1,000 athletes, young and old, elites and amateurs.

St Albans MP Anne Main said:“I am right behind the Festival of Sport; it will be an exciting sporting event for St Albans. I am sure everyone is looking forward to joining athletes and families from across St Albans and taking on sporting challenges together.”

Event director David Enright added: “The Festival of Sport in St Albans will provide a day long feast of sport and fun for the city. There are events for every member of the family, as well as a Sports Village and entertainment for spectators and supporters. We are announcing the Festival now to give as many people as possible the chance to prepare for and enter one or more of the events. The Festival of Sport will be St Alban’s own local Olympiad.”

Lesley Garner, general manager Westminster Lodge Leisure Centre, concluded: “The Everyone Active Team at Westminster Lodge are very excited to be part of this fantastic event. We welcome so many families into our facility and I know that the Festival of Sport will be supported whole heartedly by our members and the residents of St Albans. There is something for everyone, and a great starting point for people that have never competed in any way before. We are looking forward to supporting the event and being part of the city’s first Festival of Sport.”
