St Albans kept their London Two North West relegation fears at bay with an impressive 35-12 win away at HAC on Saturday.

The Saints needed a win, and at ground they had never emerged as victors, to stand any chance of staying up and, led by two tries from Jeremy Walmsley and 15 points from Mark Kentish, they delivered.

With two games left, the Saints and Old Merchant Taylors’ are separated by two points as they fight to retain their status in the league. Hemel Hempstead have already been relegated.

The teams meet on the final day of the season and it could be a showdown to determine who drops out of the league.

The momentum seems to be with St Albans at the moment, although produced a shock 33-33 draw with third-placed Chiswick, who travel to Boggymead this Saturday, in this last outing.

The Saints flew out of the blocks and were rewarded with a penalty. Kentish’s kick sailed wide but he was perfect with his next attempt to give his side an early lead.

HAC hit back with a try but the lead didn’t last long as Declan Hallam crashed over. It was set up by the forwards making clean ball available to Harry Trude, whose deft pass set up Hallam.

The lead swung back in HAC’s favour with a converted try but St Albans remained right on their tail, with Kentish kicking his second penalty to bring up a half-time score of 12-11.

If the first period was back-and-forth, the second was all one way as St Albans, scrapping for their lives, racked up 24 unanswered points.

Kentish kicked the Saints back in front before Walmsley found a gap in the line to touch down. He was back over the line soon after following excellent work from fly-half Sam Millicheap and Brenton Lemiere.

Winger Nick Hegarty dotted down the last try of the match, which was converted by Kentish, as St Albans lived to fight another day in London Two North West.
