Tactical switch accounts for slow start says Wheeler

Harry Wheeler admitted he may have got his tactics wrong as St Albans City fought from behind to grab a draw against Bishop’s Stortford at Clarence Park.
The visitors had taken a deserved first half lead and could have went into the break further ahead.
However Saints were a different outfit in the second half and a Louie Theophanous goal brought them a share of the spoils.
Wheeler admitted the slow start could be down to a change made prior to the game.
He said: “We’ve been playing a certain way and I’ve changed it to match them. But they changed it to match us but they didn’t exactly as we do it.
“So we waited until we were sure of what they had done before changing and we did that 10 minutes before half-time to the system we usually play.
“So I would say the poor start was tactical.
“But the players have to take ownership, they didn’t get close to their men but they said they were finding it hard because of the formation.”
And the caretaker manager was delighted at the way his side performed after the reshuffle.
He said: “We changed it and told them there was no more excuses and to be fair second half they don’t need one.
“They needed a little bit of a talking to at half-time but I’m absolutely delighted with the response. I couldn’t have asked for more in the second half.”
And Wheeler felt his side could have gone on and won it.
He said: “We pushed hard and had a few more chances. We could have been more clinical but we had many chances second half.
“They had a few, they’re a good side and they will always threaten but we are creating so many chances at the moment.”
One big moment came on 72 minutes when Bishop’s Stortford captain, Anthony Church, appeared to punch the ball away when under pressure from Tom Bender.
But Wheeler was not looking to bemoan the lack of a decision.
He said: “It was [a penalty] and the linesmen this end said it was. The ref said he needed to review it but didn’t have a good angle.
“But it was an identical one to Tom Bender’s a few weeks ago so these things come and go.
“We’re not going to dwell on it, like we’re not going to dwell on the first half.
“We’re going to go from our second half performance.”
