FIRST half strikes from Joackim Ehui and Brian Haule ended St Albans City’s pre-season schedule with victory at Potters Bar Town.

Ken Charlery again led the side in the absence of David Howell, whose stay in New York may be extended due to a lost passport, and the stand-in boss saw his side go ahead inside two minutes when a corner from Adam Fry was helped on by striker Rob Haworth and Ehui was on hand to fire the ball past Potter Bar ‘keeper Ryan Burbridge.

Set pieces proved decisive for the Saints with their second goal following in a similar fashion to the first. Again it was a Fry corner that caused the damage and this time Haule was on hand to head past Burbridge to double City’s lead after just 17 minutes.

City used the game to look at two more goalkeepers as they try to find a replacement for Nick Jupp while he is on international duty with Great Britain at the World Student Games. Phil Carpenter was given the first 45 minutes but wasn’t given much of a chance to impress as Potters Bar failed to break down the City defence.

After the break City gave a run-out to former Arlesey Town and Kettering stopper Nick Bussey but he too was well guarded by a stubborn rearguard showing from the Saints.

Haule and Ehui both had opportunities to double their own tally but this time Burbridge was equal to the efforts and the scoreline remained the same.

City’s final game before their Southern Premier Division curtain-raiser with Cirencester Town is Tuesday night’s Herts Charity Cup tie with Cheshunt.
