More quality - that is top of the shopping list for Ian Allinson after St Albans City's season ended with another brave yet fruitless play-off chase.

Saints finished their National South year with a lacklustre 4-0 loss at home to champions Torquay United, the pain of defeat sharpened by the fact that a victory would have seen them reach the post-season festivities.

And as manager Ian Allinson contemplated the entire campaign, he felt it was the extra bit of skill and know-how that was the key missing ingredient.

He said: “We've lacked a bit of quality in the last few weeks. Our distribution, our picking of the pass, making the right decision, doing the right things and having a picture in your head, some of our players have really struggled with that recently.

“We've got to think long and hard and you have to respect that there is a budget we have to work in so we can only go and get players that we feel will be better than what we already have.

“We'll speak to the players and it's their prerogative if they want to stay or go. If they want to stay then we'll negotiate a deal.

“If there are players we want to keep we'll talk to them. If there are players who think the grass is greener then they can go and we'll have to rebuild.

“It's not something that worries me though as there are a lot of people who want to come to the football club.

“It's just whether we are in a position where we can financially afford them.”

Allinson has yet to sit down with co-owners Lawrence Levy and John McGowan although that will happen sooner rather than later.

And the City boss admitted he has an idea in his head of who he wants to add.

He said: “We've got a couple of targets we want to highlight and bring in quickly but a lot will come down to player's demands.

“I expect at this stage of the season you have to rebuild and I'll have to look into areas that we've been really good in recent years but where we've fallen short this one. That's the wide areas and the forwards.

“We maybe need to bring in someone who is a little bit younger and who wants to progress and impose themselves on this team but learn that they are not going to play every week.

“It's been a long season with the injuries we've picked up.

“But I'm immensely proud of the players though, they've pushed themselves to the limit.

“We won games in the last couple of minutes when we could quite easily have been out of them.

“Some of the performances on the road since Christmas have been outstanding but we've come up short again.

“We've had inconsistent spells again where we've took some heavy defeats and we've conceded too many goals.”
