Players from St Albans City have reacted to the news that Jimmy Gray and Graham Golds had resigned as joint-managers.

Gray and Golds quit moments after City lost 4-0 to Lowestoft Town on Saturday.

It was the club’s third defeat in eight days, with Saints sitting second bottom of the Vanarama National League South.

City skipper, Lee Chappell, said the pair were a big part of the reason he moved to Clarence Park and he called on the players to show some fighting spirit.

He said: “Absolutely gutted for Jimmy & Goldsy, played a massive part in my decision to move clubs.

“We as players have let them down & we must improve.”

He went on to say that it was time for the players to show some fighting spirit and prove they want to get the club up the table.

Goalkeeper Joe Welch thanked the pair and said that any memories should be of their full tenure, not just this season.

The City shotstopper said: “I‘d like to thank G&G for what they have done.

“They have done a great job! People need to remember where the club was when they took over.”

And like his captain he said the players needed to take accept their part in the decision.

He said: “Results have been poor and as players we have to take some responsibility.

“I wish them both the very best in the future.”

Central defender Darren Locke said he was “genuinely gutted” at the news before saying that he owed them a lot.

He said: “Two guys who worked tirelessly for the club!

“Certainly had my backing and sure the rest off the boys too! I personally owe them so much.”

He finished by saying the club wouldn’t be the same without them, adding: “From where the club was when I first signed to where we are now is amazing. I have no doubt they will both walk straight into a new job!”
