Former St Albans City captain Ben Martin looks set to return to the club.

Martin, 32, joined Boreham Wood in January and helped them to promotion from National League South. However, he has agreed to leave Wood and has told joint manager James Gray that he wants to rejoin the club.

“He’s got offers from elsewhere but he’s keen to come back,” said Gray. “With his experience and what he will bring, it would be daft to turn the opportunity down to bring him back.

“We’ll probably get something done this week.”

Martin has yet to sign for the club but has played in the last two friendlies, Saturday’s 0-0 draw at Billericay Town and Tuesday’s 1-1 stalemate with a Crystal Palace XI.

Gray has been impressed by what he’s seen from Martin, who had a knee operation earlier this year.

“Benny has had two games and he’s been outstanding in both,” he said.

Martin’s return will boost a defensive line-up that is missing new signing Jack Lampe through illness.

The former Concord Rangers defender has only managed 45 minutes this summer and hasn’t been able to participate in training.

“He is a million miles away from doing anything,” admitted the manager. “He’s nowhere near ready for the start of the season.”
