Search for new boss starts immediately

ST ALBANS City have started their search for a new manager after the club decided not to retain the services of Steve Castle.

The Saints finished bottom of Conference South last season after a turbulent year off the pitch and although new chairman Ian Ridley had met with Castle to discuss plans for the future the club’s new board felt a fresh start would be most beneficial.

“This was a decision not taken lightly. Steve did a sound job in very difficult circumstances last season and the club is grateful to him for his perseverance,” said Ridley in a statement on the club’s website.

“On balance, however, the need is for a change of direction after relegation last season. The feeling is that a new appointment to oversee matters on the field would be best if we are to maintain the impetus that the club is building off the field.

“When I communicated the decision to Steve, he was naturally disappointed and I understand that, but he took it with a professionalism that says much about him.

“We thank him for all his efforts and, knowing that his abilities, standing and experience will enable him to find another position in the game if he chooses, we wish him well with whatever he does next.”

The club’s search for a new manager has started immediately with the Saints’ board keen for a quick appointment before pre-season training begins.
