St Albans City’s manager Ian Allinson is not wanting to get carried away with the club’s fine form – but says “we must take our chance”.

City’s 5-0 win over Hungerford Town was their fifth straight success in the Vanarama National League South, a run that has catapulted them into second place.

And while the Saints’ gaffer knows there is still a lot of football to be played this year, he admits the rapid improvement they have made is forcing him to rethink his hopes.

He said: “Football is very fickle and you only need one injury, one loss of form, one sending-off and it could change everything we’re building here and we could end up not making it.

“But that’s about progression. We’ve probably progressed quicker than I expected but we’re there and we’ve got to take our chance.

“We’ll see where we are into December and if we need to bring any players in or strengthen it.

“At the moment I don’t want to break up the changing room. It’s a fantastic changing room in there and you’ve got to bring the right style of player in.

“We’ve got a fantastic energy and team spirit. The older lads do their bit by keeping us on our toes but it’s about us doing what we’re doing.”

He also knows that their impressive form will add a target on their backs and make them a prized scalp.

He added: “We’ve got a very tough game at East Thurrock [on Saturday]. We’ve got so much to play for and we know that every team we face now will show us respect but want to beat us. We’ve got to rise above that.

“Hungerford came and had a real go at us and at any stage in the first half, if they had got a goal, it would have been a different game.

“But we just need to keep attacking teams and eventually that pressure will pay off.”
