St Albans Centurions kept their winning momentum going by destroying Bath in an inter-league clash.

Having picked up their first success of the season last week against Brentwood Eels in the cup, the East League Cents travelled to neutral Oxford to take on the side from the equivalent league in the west-country.

And they came away with a huge 60-4 win.

The Centurions were in irresistible form and were clearly buoyed by the cup victory.

They raced into an early lead when Josh Lawrence powered through some weak tackling to cross the line and a second was added within 10 minutes.

This time it was a great line from Callum Porter that split the defence to register his first score of the season.

Throughout the contest Bath found the Cents’ strong, direct approach impossible to live with and Lawrence crossed twice more to secure his hat-trick before the break.

In between, Will Curtis picked up his own grubber kick to touch down and captain Joe Baker rounded off a length-of-the-field breakaway following an intercept by Alex Powdrell.

It could have been more than a 28-0 half-time lead too but Jake Lawrence could only land two conversions.

But, with their coach’s words ringing in their ears, Bath flew out of the blocks to score an unconverted try of their own.

But any hopes that it would spark a memorable comeback were left floundering as that was as good as it got.

St Albans simply redoubled their efforts and two more for Baker, clinching his own hat-trick, and one for Scott Clewlow put the contest well and truly to bed.

Just to make sure though Jake Lawrence joined the party with two late tries and the best of the lot was a well-deserved score for debutant Hallam Chapman, capping a barnstorming performance.

A delighted Baker said: “This was all about maintaining the momentum. There’s still room for improvement, of course, but there’s real structure in everything we do and a growing sense of confidence in the squad.

“We’re beginning to click and Bath just couldn’t live with our pace and power.”
