St Albans Rugby Club battled back from a slow start to grab a 17-17 draw with Kilburn Cosmos in London North West Three.

The result stretched their unbeaten run to three but they started cold in the game played on a chilly afternoon at Boggymead.

Saints looked fragmented and showed little cohesion at the outset, often spilling the ball and losing advantage which allowed the visitors to run in two quick tries.

And things could have got worse for Saints as Cosmos always looked dangerous on the break.

But they stuck to the task in hand and when Ollie Fountain came up with a bit of real flair, slicing though visitors defence for a fine individual score, it appeared the home side had warmed up.

Nick Woolley added the conversion and it was game on.

However, the visitors showed that they wanted something from the game and scored another converted try to re-establish a 10 point lead.

Woolley made sure that had been reduced to seven by the break with another penalty.

Albans looked far more effective in the second half with Mike Bennet and Jack Middleton performing well as the home side applied the pressure.

And it was from a period of sustained Saints attacking that Fountain scored his second try after a well-rounded move.

Woolley again added the conversion to level the scores.

But despite St Albans best efforts they could not find the winning break and Cosmos still looked in contention to the end.

St Albans have a week off this Saturday before returning to action with a trip to Old Merchant Taylors’ on November 19.
