ST ALBANS Strider Steve Smith travelled to Sunderland to represent the club in the English National Cross Country Champs.

Snow had fallen lightly on the morning of the event making the race a muddy challenge for the competitors from around the country taking part. Smith finished in a respectable 657th place out of 1,085 finishers over the 12k course.

On Saturday in the Tuffman Duathlon, which took place in the stunning grounds of Pippingford Park Estate in East Sussex in bitterly cold conditions, Jez Cox came 5th overall in 1hr 39mins 46secs and Graham Smith finished 34th in 2hrs 1min 40secs.

In the St Albans Parkrun Pablo Plaza Lastra was 3rd overall and followed in by 6th placed Mark Castleton and Jenny Maddocks, who took second placed lady.

On Sunday a large contingent of Striders completed the Gade Valley 17-mile training run around Hemel Hempstead. This multi-terrain event has become an integral part of the club’s training build-up for spring marathons.
