BIG things are expected of boxer Joe Smyth after he finished his four-round career with a storming win over Gordon Brennan in front of the Sky Sports cameras.

Smyth, who lives in St Albans and is due to step up into six-round fights next year, destroyed his Scottish opponent in their fight at the Goresbrook Leisure Centre in Dagenham.

Brennan's record showed three wins in five fights but he had no answer to Smyth's solid punches that left the Scotsman's left eye bruised and nose bloodied by the end of the opening session.

Smyth continued to pile on the pressure and a left-right shot unbalanced Brennan. The Scotsman's knees dipped and Smyth dealt several blows before the referee jumped between them to bring an end to the contest and make it four wins from four for Smyth.

Smyth's performance impressed everyone and his manager Jess Harding believes the St Albans boxer has an exciting future ahead of him. He said: "Joe's a good prospect and there's no reason why he can't get to the top. In another 18 months, he could be fighting for British and Commonwealth titles if he stays focused and keeps winning. We'll be looking to step Joe up next year. I'm sure he's got a big future.
