Harpenden Town took their impressive league form and moved it into a cup competition – as a 3-1 win over Wembley sent them to the semi-final of the Dudley Latham Memorial Premier League Cup.

All the goals in Tuesday night’s win at Rothamsted Park came in the first half and Town got the first of them after just six minutes.

Jack Nevin supplied a peach of a cross and Kyle McLeish side-footed the ball into the net.

They got their second on 25 minutes when a perfectly placed free-kick from Sam James gave Jack Cartwright a free header which he powered into the corner of the net.

It was three five minutes later thanks to another great header.

This time it came from Dwayne Duncan who beat the defence to get to Chris Brothwood’s corner.

Just before half time Town’s keeper Connor Sansom, who had already parried a free-kick with an athletic dive to the top corner, leapt for a cross and collided with a defender.

The ball fell for Wembley’s centre-forward who thumped a well-placed shot into the open net for 3-1 at the break.

The second half was full of action but Wembley could not pull any goals back.

Harpenden’s best attempt was from Steve O’Rielly who hit the post with a free-kick in what turned out to be the last kick of the game.

Harpenden manager Danny Plumb said: “I am really pleased because we had lost quite a few players with injuries and the young players who came in showed the strength of the squad.

“To play a good side like Wembley and win, the players who came in were outstanding.

“We are through to the semi final and now we must concentrate on the league.”

Harpenden sit fourth in the Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division but have a couple games in hand on two of the three sides above them.

And after a blank weekend, the league returns with another home game, this time against the team directly below them in the table, Leighton Town.

They follow that up with a trip to near neighbours Colney Heath on Tuesday.
