A SIXTH straight victory, this time against Welwyn Garden City 3s, saw Sandridge maintain their position at the top of the league.

Batting first, WGC struggled against tight opening bowling from John Murphy (2-42), who picked up his 50th league wicket of the season, and Lawrence White.

Skipper Lennie Peters continued with good lines but it wasn’t until Duncan Ferguson was introduced to the attack that wickets started to fall regularly.

Ferguson hit his lengths straight away and, helped by three caught and bowled dismissals, he finished with impressive figures of 8-29 as WGC crumbled.

Sandridge’s response was circumspect but they didn’t need to hurry. Tim Amoss (19) opened up and with Ian Merryfield (29) coming in at number four they saw the score up to 70 before they both fell.

There was no need to panic as Peter Camm (12no) and Peters (8no) brought up the victory score with plenty of overs to spare.
