AFTER over 26 years of service, Sue Birchall is retiring from her role as head coach at Salisbury Lawn Tennis Club.

Birchall has been an integral part of the club during her time there, taking up roles as club coach, junior organiser, junior tournament organiser, a committee member, an organiser of finals day and a team player.

Speaking to the Herts Ad, Birchall said: “I’ve very much enjoyed the coaching. When I first came to the club there was no sort of coaching programme, and now there’s coaching available to everyone from age four all the way to 64.

“I’ll remain an active member of the club so I’ll still be playing and on the committee.

“I’ve met some wonderful people and made some great friends.”

The club held a retirement party for Birchall last month, with members past and present, friends and family – husband Nick and daughters Catherine and Amy – all in attendance.

Mark Collins, the senior tournament organiser at Salisbury, spoke fondly of Birchall’s years of service.

“Sue has coached so many youngsters in all aspects of tennis and in all kinds of weather, improving their abilities and enjoyment of the great sport of tennis.

“I know we have all benefited from her enthusiasm, commitment and passion for the sport and the club.”
