St Albans Men I 2

ST ALBANS first XI continued their excellent start to the season with a second away victory in a row.

After travelling to Peterborough on a wet and windy afternoon for a late push back, St Albans were keen to gain maximum points against the ex-national league side.

In an open first 10 minutes both sides had chances to open the scoring, with St Albans failing to work the ball into the net from a number of penalty corners.

As the game progressed, St Albans managed to convert their pressure into a goal and took the lead when Simon Archer converted an improvised short corner with an excellent glanced finish from Glenn Webster's ball across the circle.

Both sides were reduced to ten men before the break with Alan Miller the recipient of a yellow card sin.

Nevertheless, the away side went in to the break one goal up.

St Albans looked to press home their advantage in the second half, and succeeded in doubling their lead midway through the half.

Ravi Vijh received the ball wide on the left and played a peach of a pass into Ed Cotter, who saw his excellent deflected shot fly into the far corner of the net.

The Peterborough team responded well, and pulled a goal back after a good move down their left wing. Sensing they could still get something from the game the home side continued to press, and St Albans were up against it when central defender Dan Hanson was also sin-binned.

In a frenetic end to the match it took an excellent save from 'keeper Malcolm Yull and a goal line clearance from Man of the Match Archer to keep the Peterborough forwards at bay and seal a 2-1 victory for St Albans.

The result means St Albans remain five points clear at the top of East Prem A. Captain Paul Cooper said: "Once again we've proved to be a difficult team to beat and have shown great maturity and determination to win against an ex-national league team.
