With manager Steve Castle away, assistant boss Andy Edwards set the side up and was looking for resilience, determination and organisation. Former Grimsby Town and Gretna player Gary Cohen made his full debut on the right flank in the only change from the defeat to Chelmsford City on Saturday, replacing the injured Rod Hicks.
Maidenhead United were unbeaten in their opening four fixtures and included former Stevenage Borough winger Dale Binns who scored twice in the impressive win at Bognor Regis Town. Former Havant & Waterlooville forward Richard Pacquette, famous for netting at Anfield against Liverpool in the FA Cup last season, led the attack.

The match was a dour contest from the kick off, with City playing slightly the more incisive football in the first half. Jonathan Hunt failed to trouble home goalkeeper Shane Gore with a low shot from 35 yards and City were mostly repelled by a strong defensive display from United centre back Dominic Sterling.
On 37 minutes City finally created a chance when Hunt delivered a dangerous free kick to the back post and centre back Ben Martin saw his header cannon back off the cross bar and away to safety.
Midfielder Ben Bowditch came close two minutes later when he collected a short free kick from Hunt and shaped up 20 yards out before firing his curling left foot shot just over the cross bar.
City started the second half well, up the slope and Clarke cracked a shot over the cross bar after Hakim knocked down a Hunt forward ball.
Maidenhead began to take charge of the game as the half went on and Pacquette powered a shot over the top after a tussle with Quilter.
City almost snatched the opening goal on 63 minutes when defender Martin struck the ball goalwards after a spell of pressure and Gore had to dive full length to his right to make the save. Earlier the goalkeeper had punched the ball away from Clarke after Hunt whipped it into the box.
Maidenhead boss Johnson 'Drax' Hipppolyte masterminded two fine substitutions on 64 minutes, introducing Bobby Behzadi and Mustafa Tyriaki from the bench. Behzadi thumped a stunning 35 yard shot goalwards on 67 minutes and Bastock superbly dived to his right to parry the strike, with Pacquette firing the loose ball across the goal.
Pacquette went close again on 74 minutes when he dived back to divert a fine header just over after a superb run and cross from Binns.
The revitalised Maidenhead side responded and on 79 minutes Behzadi lobbed forward a superb pass which Pacquette cracked into the bottom corner giving the stranded Bastock no chance.
Edwards threw on big defender Tobi Jinadu in the final seconds for his City debut as an emergency striker and although he caused some problems for the Maidenhead backline the move came to late to provide any real chance of salvation.
