St Albans City joint manager James Gray believes his side is finally hitting its stride after taking three points on their travels to Cambridge City on Wednesday evening.

Two goals from David Keenleyside and an own goal from Cambs’ James Brighton saw the Saints extend their remarkable run to one loss in 15 games – the loss coming against Mansfield Town in the FA Cup – and 11 matches unbeaten away from home.

After the win against Cambs, Gray said: “We feel we’re learning and getting to where we want to be; we look like a team and I’m pleased for everyone associated with the club.

“I’m massively pleased with the performance; we had a bit of everything: we played some great stuff in the first half and got two great goals from Keenleyside but we were also dodged and resilient to keep their chances to a minimum.”

Wednesday night was Saints’ first league game since October 28 against Hitchin Town after three weeks of FA Cup and FA Trophy action. While the cup runs have brought a feeling of optimism, Gray admitted the league is main priority.

“The FA Trophy and FA Cup are gone for a couple of weeks and we’re back to league action. We’ve lost to sides above us, and Cambs are on a good run of form, so to come here and get a convincing win will do our confidence the world of good.”

He added: “I haven’t ruled out promotion; we need to be [in the play-off spots] around Christmas.”

Next up for St Albans is an away trip to St Neots on Saturday, 3pm kick-off.

Speaking ahead of the game, Gray said: “There’s no easy games in this league; we’ll take one game at a time but we’re confident and on a good run of form.

“We’re 11 unbeaten away from home and hopefully we’ll make it 12 on Saturday.”
