St Albans City’s international following is spreading across Europe thanks to a group of fans.

The club already has a growing Norwegian branch that makes the pilgrimage to Clarence Park at least three times a season. And now nine fans are hoping to do the same in Germany with St Albans’ twinned city: Worms.

The Saints fans have made contact with Wormatia Worms, who play in the Regionalliga Sudwest, the fourth tier of German football, and will see them in action against FK Pirmasens on August 23.

One the fans going, James Edwards, said the trip was born out of a love of lower league football and building connections.

“St Albans is twinned with Worms and we wanted to build a connection between the two cities,” he told the Herts Ad.

“The club is getting more and more fans from Norway so we’re going to make the trip over there but we want to go to Germany first and build a partnership.”

He added: “The group going so is aged between 20 and 40 and we’re all from different backgrounds but it’s so tight-knit because of St Albans City. We want to do the best for the club and going over to Germany is part of that.

In essence, the trip is about extending the St Albans City family.

“Everyone gets along with the guys from Norway and it’s amazing that out of all the clubs in the country they come here,” said Edwards.

“They feel like St Albaners even though they live in Norway.”

At the heart of the trip, though, is football and the clash between Wormatia Worms and FK Pirmasens is undoubtedly the highlight of the trip.

“That is the main reason we’re going,” explained Edwards.

“We miss a St Albans game but how often do a group of supporters get to go to a different country? Hopefully them embrace us and make it a great day.

“The way Germans support their teams is incredible so we want to see how they are on the terraces and get some ideas that we can bring back to Clarence Park.

“Everyone can’t wait.”
