Ian Allinson says his St Albans City side still have many areas to work on after squeezing past Ryman League North outfit Ware 2-1 in the Herts Charity Cup first round.

The Saints found themselves 1-0 down at half-time thanks to Gareth Price’s effort in the eighth minute but new boys Rhys Hoenes and Junior Morias spared their blushes with two second-half strikes.

The encounter at Wodson Park threw up a plethora of chances at either end but Allinson was overall happy with the result.

The City boss said: “There are lots of things to think about. We’re not the finished article.

“We’ve got lots to go and work on. The crazy thing is we’ve only lost one pre-season game and that was at home to Stevenage when we introduced six of the youth team players in the last 30 minutes.

“We did leave ourselves exposed at the back at times and gave the ball away cheaply and we have to stamp that out as quick as possible.”

On the introduction of Stevenage loan pair Dipo Akinyemi and Ryan Johnson, he continued: “Ryan put in a strong performance and Dipo started quietly but got stronger as the second half wore on.”
