WEEKS after putting Herts top young swimmers through their paces, Ruta Meilutyte has broken the 100m breast stroke world record.
The 16-year-old, who is from Lithuania but lives and trains in England, was in Herts at the beginning of July with Plymouth Leander head coach Jon Rudd and Ben Proud, the British 50m butterfly champion, to put eight of the counties swimmers through a county development day.
Last summer she won the country’s first Olympic goal and now she has added the 100m breaststroke world title with victory in Barcelona.
The 16-year-old, who is based in Plymouth, clocked one minute 4.42 seconds, just outside the world record she set in the semi-finals.
