A good performance from the forwards on Saturday and some solid defence, were instrumental in giving Tabard a deserved 20-6 victory over Diss.
Straight from the kick-off Tabard attacked Diss, quickly working their way upfield and threatening their opponent’s line. Swift passing nearly brought wing Joe Calnan a try but resolute defence kept Tabard out.
However, with Diss defending strongly Tabard had a lineout close in. Second row Sam Barrow took the catch and a systematic forward drive saw Tabard open the scoring with flanker Cam O’Connor claiming the touchdown.
From the ensuing kick-off it was the turn of Diss to put pressure on the Tabard line and the home side were forced on to the defensive and just managed to keep Diss out.
Eventually Tabard relieved the pressure and, from a lineout just inside the Diss 22, they again executed a forward drive. In a magnificent effort of sustained control, Tabard were able to once again drive Diss over their line for the try, this time number eight Scott Stoba claiming the touchdown.
The game then continued at a fast pace with both sides having good periods and in one instance only a last ditch tackle from Tabard fullback, Elliot Hurrell, avoided Diss going in under the posts. However, there were no further scores and the teams turned round with Tabard 10 points ahead.
From the kick off Diss were awarded a penalty, which they kicked, but two minutes later Tabard scored another good try. Jack Reilly kicked for ball cross field for Calnan who offloaded to Hurrell to dot down/
Shortly after Diss kicked another penalty to leave Tabard ahead by 15 points to six.
The game then settled into another dogged confrontation until Tabard again got their chance. This time they ran a free-kick and second row Paul Hagan went over to score the bonus point try.
Next week Tabard are away to Luton, kick-off 3pm.
