Archant

There were mistakes aplenty from both Hull Ionians and Old Albanian but in the end OAs picked up the 36-26 win.

It was Albanian’s first of the season and while there were personnel changes, head coach Gavin Hogg will be delighted to gain a first five pointer of the year, although maybe not so much by the error count.

Yet a win is a win and if that can be achieved even when the playing standard leaves a bit to be desired, that is positive enough.

Hull opened the scoring but Ben Cooper powered over close enough to the posts for Dan Watt’s successful conversion and Elliott Obatoyinbo put the visitors 12-7 up at the break.

However, two converted tries after the interval gave Ionians a cushion and with the Albanian penalty count growing, matters looked a tad ominous.

Craig Dowsett and Watt brought up the try bonus point and the fly-half added the extras to his own score to give them a three-point lead with 15 minutes to go.

Again that lead was lost but Obatoyinbo and Dowsett went on to grab their second tries and Watt’s conversion ended the day.

Birmingham Moseley, who sit one place above OAs in the National One table, are at Woollams on Saturday.
