Vees are searching for new talent

VERULAMIAN Rugby Football Club has offered senior rugby for more than 50 years, and has turned attentions to the future.

The OV Chariots mini rugby set up has grown steadily since inception in 2005 and numbered about 100 active members in 2007-8. Last year also saw the club gain RFU Seal of Approval status, which is certificated recognition that the club is both ably organised and has the appropriate structure and policies in place. It is hoped that in future years many players will progress into the senior sides.

The club makes every effort to make this new venture a success. The coaches, some of whom still play on a Saturday, have been on Twickenham training courses and know how to ensure the game is played in a safe but enjoyable environment.

Aims for the 2008-9 season are to swell coaching and support teams, establish partnerships with local schools and field a full team for each age group from Under 7s through to Under 11s, plus Under 13s and Under 15s in the Juniors.

Parents can either watch the action or settle into the clubhouse for food and a read of the Sunday papers. On the social front, last year the club hosted a packed Christmas party for the children with a magician, food and even Father Christmas putting in an appearance.

The lowest age groups (Under 7s) start with tag rugby, and the coaching follows the RFU guideline 'continuum' to introduce tackling and other elements of the game for older children. Friendly games are played against other Hertfordshire clubs, and the results have been very encouraging especially with so many youngsters new to rugby.

Mini and junior rugby is suitable for both boys and girls and is great way to channel energy in a way that teaches respect for others, teamwork and develops skills and fitness.

Next season starts with a registration day at 10am on Sunday, September 7 and all Sundays from then.

The club is located just opposite the Ayletts garden centre off the A414 (on the left if leaving the London Colney roundabout towards Watford/M1). For further details see the website at www.vrugby.com and click on the minis button, or call 01727 759613 and speak to Minis Chairman Rob Lines.
