HARPENDEN shone in the sunshine at Redbourn Lane against Enfield Ignatians on Saturday.
Harpenden's traditional end of season surge continued as they ran in 47 points in a fine display of free-flowing rugby.
The foundations were provided by the pack with stand-out performances from Rob Dumpleton and Tom Hoare in the second row.
The dominance of the pack provided the backline with go-forward ball on which they capitalised. A feast of running rugby ensued, much to the delight of the crowd enjoying both the warmth of the day and the quality of the rugby. Three excellent phases of play allowed John Barton, Joe Tennant and Jonathan Arrowsmith to all cross the line before the half-time whistle. Enfield also managed to cross the line as they fought against Harpenden's building momentum.
The second half was a very similar story. The Harpenden pack continued their dominance, with some massive hits coming in from Ben Allerton in particular and the pack in general.
The fine performance of the pack allowed the backs the time and the space to make some impressive gain-line breaks which resulted in tries for Tom Collins, a second for John Barton, Ben Allerton and Richard Kearns.
Impressively, Enfield did not lose heart and gained more possession. However the defence of Harpenden, marshalled from the back by the never ceasing voice of Kearns, stood fast, with the defence around the fringes showing a marked improvement.
The final score was 47-7 which does perhaps not do justice to the effort the men from Enfield gave. However it does perhaps give a glimpse as to what Harpenden are capable of given firm conditions under foot.
