Old Brentwoods 17 Verulamians 10
NEW signing David Simpson scored two tries from full back but it was not enough to secure a result for Vees at Essex One side Old Brentwoods in the EDF Energy Junior Vase.
Vees started strongly with Simpson crossing the line early after the back line showed some deft handling. Nick Wolley at 10 could not convert. Older brother Joe Woolley, captaining the Vees for the first time in the absence of Ali Luxford, kept the forwards firing from the restart.
An impressive 50-metre break up field by back row Henry Brewster, spinning out of tackles, further gave Vees confidence of victory but they could not convert their dominance into tries and a turnover saw the Old Brentwood wing break free to score against the run of play.
The game became scrappy, with Vees suffering from handling mistakes in the midfield and being penalised constantly for various infringements. Vees managed to regain the lead again before the break when Liddiard broke left from a ruck, drawing the defence across to feed Simpson on a straight run. He stepped round the full back to score his second try.
Old Brentwood struck back again when they capitalised on one of their few opportunities in the half. A crossfield kick by Woolley behind the OBs back line failed to find touch and the right winger scooped it up and ran down the wing, breaking three tackles to draw them level before the break.
The second half was a scrappy affair, with a lot of penalties and both sides struggling to build up momentum through the phases. When OBs scored a converted try with a few minutes to go to full time, it was game over.
Vees are back to league action next week when they travel away to Harlequins Amateurs.
