Harpenden Rugby Club’s annual National Pub Sevens proved a big hit on Sunday.

A strong Apache squad won the Singleton Cup, presented by Worcester and ex-England under-20 hooker Joe Singleton in memory of his father David, with a 31-0 win over Sherrards Assassins.

And the match capped an excellent day of action at the high-profile tournament, where The Seven Dwarves (plate), Harpenden Roosters (barrel) and Dambuster Ladies were also celebrating with silverware.

A total of 30 teams took part, slightly down on the previous due to external factors such as the Women’s World Cup in Belfast, but the day was hailed as a success for rugby and entertainment.

Apache spokesman Adam Hurst said he felt the whole tournament had been well-organised and well-supported compared to similar events and even mooted the possibility of Harpenden being recommended for consideration in the Elite Series of seven-a-side events.
