Richmond II 7 OA Saints 20

IN their third league contest of the season OA Saints travelled away to Richmond.

This game is always a close contest and the Saints prepared for a tough match against the undefeated Richmond team.

The Saints kicked off on a wet and blustery pitch and applied pressure from the start. Gaining a penalty in Richmond's half, centre Sarah McKenna kicked to the corner and the Saints set up a driving maul from the lineout.

The forwards pushed over the line with hooker Nadia Brannon touching down to open the scoring.

The first half continued with pressure from the Saints but strong defence from Richmond held them out for much of the half. The Saints dominated the set piece play but were unable to convert until another penalty was kicked to the corner.

In a repeat performance of the first try a rolling maul was set up, despite a valiant attempt from Richmond and the Saints managed to recycle the ball to lock Jemma Knighton who crashed over for the second score of the match and to give Saints a 10-0 lead at half time.

After losing a 12-point lead last week the Saints were keen not to make the same mistake and came out fighting after the break.

Despite dominating the scrums and lineouts, the next 20 minutes resulted in a stalemate. With some crunching tackles from replacement centre Simone and full back Megan it was not long before the opposition spilt the ball and centre McKenna pounced hacking the ball through the defence, managing a second chip as she was knocked over.

Winger Claire McKenna dived on the ball over the line completing a second McKenna sister double act in as many weeks.

Richmond made it clear they were not ready to give up and snatched the ball mid-air to score an interception try under the posts which was duly converted to close the score to 15-7 in the Saints' favour.

With less than 10 minutes left on the clock Sarah McKenna put the game beyond doubt scoring a fantastic individual try out sprinting the opposition and touching down in the corner. The final whistle blew putting last week's demons to rest with a 20-7 win for the Saints and second position in the league.

n OA Saints II hosted local rivals Hertford on Sunday running out 15-0 victors.

Strong running from Lucy Wilson saw the Saints take a 5-0 lead.

The Saints second try was run in by Beth Healy taking a switch ball from fly half Nat Granger before weaving her way in and out of the Hertford defence.

The final try of the match came from a break away from centre Charlie White.
