IN Ryder Cup year, Verulam Golf Club's annual Samuel Ryder Trophy competition has special significance, not only commemorating the club's most famous member, three times captain, who donated the famous gold trophy, but this year being the 150th anniversary of Ryder's birth.

The Verulam club is hoping for a bumper entry this year for the competition which will take place on Saturday, September 6. The format is medal foursomes in the morning and fourballs in the afternoon. It is open to single figure golfers, entry £75 per pair, and entry forms are available from Peter Watson, telephone 01727 853327, or at gm@verulamgolf.co.uk
