Herts Senior Centenary Trophy semi-final

Park Street Village 1 Hatfield Town 2 (After Extra Time)

PARK Street Village were cruelly knocked out of the Herts Senior Centenary Trophy after taking Spartan South Midlands side Hatfield Town to extra time.

Unfortunately for PSV their opponents had superior fitness levels and netted the winner seven minutes into extra time and boss Ryan Thompson told The Herts Advertiser it was a bitter pill to swallow.

"We played so well and all we've come away with is credit. I don't know if we were too fired up but in the first half we were a bit timid. "We had a little talk at half time and a few of the lads put their hands up and said they've got more to give and second half we were superb."

Goalkeeper Tony Kerby pulled off a blinding save to deny Hatfield early on but couldn't stop the visitors opening the scoring three minutes before the interval.

The outstanding Martin Standen set up Trevor Golder who had escaped from his marker and was free to head home.

PSV came out after the interval and completely dominated the game drawing level 20 minutes from time when Andy Ruck netted.

The home side had their tails up and gave everything to find the winning goal but with no joy, so the game entered extra time.

Unfortunately for PSV, their opponents had a superior level of fitness and this told in extra time.

Seven minutes into the first period of extra time Hatfield struck the winner when Jason Casewell drifted between two defenders and slotted home.

Thompson was delighted with his players' application but says it just wasn't his team's day.

"We pushed for the winner but it just wasn't to be. Extra time was the one we didn't want because we've only played three times in the last eight weeks and we haven't been able to train. We looked a little bit flat and struggled with the fitness levels."

This was PSV's third tie against Spartan South Midlands opposition and they've given a good account of themselves on each occasion.

"This is the third time this season we've played a South Midlands side and not one has beaten us in 90 minutes" said Thompson.

"It's one of those I'll probably look back on and say what a great performance. If people came along and watched they wouldn't know which team was the South Midlands and which was the Herts County side. The effort was unbelievable."

Village turn their attentions to the Anagram Records Trophy on Saturday when they take on Baldock Town Letchworth and Thompson says if his team match last weekend's efforts they will have a great chance of progressing.

"The Anagram is not as prestigious as the Herts Centenary Trophy but it's harder to win. If the lads put in the effort and performance they did last weekend I'll have no worries.
