Park Street Village manager Ryan Thompson admitted his side's 2-1 defeat at the hands of MK Wanderers in the Anagram Cup first round was "a bitter pill to swallow".

Thompson said he couldn't recognise his team from the side that is flying high at the business end of the Herts Senior County Premier Division.

"We just weren't at the races," Thompson told The Herts Advertiser. "Too many players didn't perform. If you were to give them all a mark out of 10 then nobody would have been above a five.

"A few of the lads came up to me and apologised afterwards and that says a lot about them. I have to hold my hands up as well as the manager - I probably got it wrong.

"We have five young lads in the side and while ability-wise they are good enough the match was probably a bit too physical for them to shine."

It could have been all so different for PSV as they certainly had enough chances to have gone through.

Top goalscorer Matty Newman had a great chance to open the scoring when he latched on to a through ball but Wanderers' goalkeeper Tom Clark saved well.

But on 17 minutes PSV hit the front when Chris Cutmore made excellent progress down the wing before crossing for Lee Shackell to give his side the lead.

But this was as good as it got for PSV as they failed build on their lead and within two minutes Wanderers were level.

Dan Dykes tricked his way past a defender before lashing home a long range effort with his left foot to restore parity.

Thompson admitted a few home truths were said at half time to his side but they couldn't rouse themselves enough to find any form.

Nathan Ash gave the visitors the lead and it became even more of an uphill struggle for PSV.

Newman had a couple of half chances but Thompson conceded his side got what they deserved.

"We've certainly played against a lot better sides in the division we're in now. They weren't that good, but we were worse."

Thompson said it is crucial his side pick themselves up this weekend for the visit of London Lions, who sit third in the Herts Senior County Premier Division title, just four points above PSV.

"We've got to get the win - a draw is no good for us. If we've got any aspirations of doing anything in this league then we need all three points.

"To close the gap on them to just a point would be a massive boost for us and we need that after last weekend.
