St Albans & London Colney ABA enjoyed a fantastic set of results at their sold-out charity boxing show.
The Toulmin drive-based boxing club put on the Jamie Hulse Tribute event at St Columba’s College in front of 300 people.
And the boxers from the home club did themselves proud, winning nine of the 11 bouts against fighters from the home counties and south-east.
Liam Murphy led the way with victory over Sebastian Majewski to win the Jamie Hulse Trophy for the second time while the bout of the night was definitely Sam Ashby’s win over Cheshunt’s Gary Nallen, one in which he showed some excellent boxing.
Four of the fights pitted St Albans against Stevenage with Alfie Gwillim , Taylor McCarthy and Nana Amanigwa recording victories against Nick Hayman, Tommy Lee and Corey Carter.
John P McCartney just fell short against Liam Finley.
Tommy McDonagh only just lost in a fast and furious junior bout to Bobby Huggins of Marston but Bilal M Khan had the beating of Lennon Swords.
John Stanley and Luke Collins had wins against boxers from Hemel Hempstead while Christian Bozzia beat Nathan Smith of Haddenham & Ely.
The now established Jamie Hulse Tribute night is a biannual event organised by close family and friends to raise much-needed funds for the club.
Jamie, who was tragically killed in an accident abroad some years ago, was a huge supporter and funds donator to the club and had strong belief in the discipline and manners boxing instils in young people.
He accredited some of his business success to having been a young boxer at the club.
Some of the star guests on the night were Steve Collins and Herrol ‘Bomber’ Graham.
Event organiser Kevin Matthew said: “The boxing proved how far the club and the boxers have come in a relatively short space of time.
“The victory is a credit to the hard work of the trainers behind the scenes who volunteer their time week in week out to keep the club improving.
“Among the many compliments on the night were comments like ‘your boys are boxing way ahead’ and ‘we’ve got some training to do to get to St Albans’ level’.”
The good results followed on Sunday when Anthony Aggard won the Junior Novice Amateur Boxing Alliance Championship.
