SAM CLARIDGE and Tom Brown of Harpenden Common produced two sub-par rounds at Moor Park to win the Herts Inter-Club Foursomes title and the home club became the first holders of a new trophy for the best club pairs teams.

Over the High course, the Harpenden Common duo opened with a one under par round of 71 and repeated that in the afternoon to claim the foursomes trophy, their l42 total being three strokes ahead of home pair John Ambridge and Nick Algate, 72 73, with James Jankowski and Anthony Hughes (Potters Bar), 79 69, a further three strokes back.

In memory of the late Peggy Harkett, wife of former Herts president and secretary Clive, the Welwyn Garden City club donated a new cup for the best club two pairs, the first winners with a total of 296 being Moor Park, Ambridge and Algate, 145, and Mitchell Steel and Danny West 151 (75 76), three strokes ahead of Potters Bar, Jankowski and Hughes 148, and Mark Cohen and Paul Davy 151 (77 74).

Accepting the new trophy, team captain John Ambridge paid tribute to Peggy, praising her work for the county. She was present at every county championship and event assisting Clive, a former captain of Welwyn Garden City club, during his 10 years as county secretary.

Tony Welsh, captain, and previous year captain Bill Williams, represented trophy donors Welwyn Garden City.

l FOURSOMES was the format for the inter-club Under 18 and Under 16 teams at Mid Herts, with South Herts 'A' claiming the Peggy Imogen de Podesta Trophy from Sandy Lodge 'A'.

For South Herts, Under 18s Hugo Simpson and Nick Martin (66) and Under 16s Brendan Mullarkey and Stephen McGowan (76) scored 142 points, as did Sandy Lodge Under 18s Aaron Hayne and Christopher Brosnan (73) and Under 16s James Brosnan and Ben Smith (69), the result on a countback.

The best return for the Under 18s of 72 was by Adam Highfield and Matthew Fleming (Moor Park 'A'), with Matthew Pocock and Ben Worlock (Mid Herts 'B') 70. For the Under 16s, the best return was by Josh Johnson and Leigh Norcott (Welwyn Garden City) 74, with Jac Hicks and Lara Cornell (Mid Herts 'A'), 73.

For Harpenden Common 'A' Under 16s Marcus Fox and Louise Gannon had 73, for Brookmans Park 'A' Under 16s Jack Wilsher and Michael Judson had 70, and for Harpenden 'A' Under 16s Finlay Mitchell and Oliver Drain had 72.

l TRAILING by a stroke after the first round and after a bogey start to his second round, Bedfordshire county player John Kemp hit top form to collect six birdies for a five under par 65 and win the Faldo Commemoration Jug at Welwyn Garden City for the second time.

Kemp, from John O'Gaunt, who won the title two years ago, had opened with 72 and his 65 gave him a three under par total of 137 to win by four strokes in the 21st year of the event. Second was Tom Shadbolt (Mid Herts) 71 70, third came Kemp's clubmate Mark Wharton 75 68 and fourth Tom Dalby (Birstall) 74 69.

In the tournament for club champions to mark the 1987 Open Championship victory of the club's one-time club champion Nick Faldo, only four players beat par, all in the afternoon. Three players on 71 tied for the first round lead - Tom Shadbolt (Mid Herts), Tom Gamble (Birstall) and former winner Ed Conduit (Elton Furze).

After his bogey start to his second round Kemp followed with three pars, then birdied 4, 5 and 8 and after the turn birdied 12, 13 and 16, his 65 being two shots off the course record.

Nick Faldo's parents George and Joyce maintained their attendance at the event over the years and Mrs Faldo referred at the prizegiving to Nick's captaincy of the Ryder Cup next month.
