THE Greenwood Park annual President's Day was this year brought forward to take advantage of the warmer sunnier July weather.
Unfortunately the disappointing July weather did not live up to the billing but Park ensured an enjoyable day. Park fielded two teams, Old Chiswelians and Old Woodgreenians, skippered by club vice skippers Kyle Gloudemans and Sam T. Nash respectively.
Nash won the all important toss for the 40 over game, and forced Chiswellians to bat first. That plan looked flawed as Baker smashed 18 from Atkins first over and a half before falling to the same bowler. Despite a slow middle period to the innings, runs from Benson (45), Mahbubul (15), Gloudemans (35) and Haydock (15), saw Chiswellians to a respectable 166 from their 40 overs.
The strong batting line up of Woodgreenians faltered as Petchey fell to the first ball of the season from Matt Stevens, and Craddock, Phillips and skipper Nash were all back in the pavilion with the score at 6-4.
Eyre scored an impressive 65, but with only Atkins and Lee managing double figures in support, Woodgreenians were skittled out for 114 with more than five overs remaining. Sam J. Nash would deservedly claim the best bowling of the day with 3-12 from 6.4 overs.
The after match barbeque provided some consolation for the beaten team, but bragging rights will remain firmly with the Old Chiswellians for the next 12 months.
Matt Stevens completed a good personal weekend earning the Young Player of the Match award, and the funds raised from the event will be important to Park for their youth player development programme. Email email@example.com for more information about the club and how to join.
