A GLORIOUS weekend for cricket was marked by mainly positive results for St Albans Cricket Club.

St Albans 1st XI batted first against Hitchin, scoring 237-6 after an impressive 63 from opener and captain Martin Jones. Rajendran made a typical 38 not out at the end of the innings with a vast array of expansive shots.

Both were ably supported by newcomers Lloyd De Saint Pern (24) and Hanief Mukuddem (56).

In response, Hitchin made 236-9 after a sudden collapse from a seemingly comfortable winning position.

Seventeen-year-old Daniel Rosson bowled superbly to take 3-58, Rajendran also taking two wickets.

The game ended with Hitchin needing three runs off the last ball with only one wicket remaining, a brilliant advertisement of cricket in wonderful weather.

The St Albans 2nd XI fared very differently, scraping towards 142 all out off 49 overs against Watton-at-Stone.

Debutant Maddy Kayani played excellently for 38, ably supported by captain Sam Rowlands (26) and wicketkeeper Grant Carveth (25).

In response, Watton-at-Stone reached St Albans’ target without the loss of a wicket due to some loose bowling despite the good opening spells of Richard Pitts and Dom Watkins.

Having won the toss and decided to bat, St Albans 3rds managed a respectable 179 against Tewin in SHL Division Seven. Stand out performers were James (35) and Fleming (48).

However, the batting performance was outshone by the bowling performance, started by Fleming and Tinkler.

Ypey and Masqood kept up the pressure on Tewin’s batsman, before Tinkler cleaned up the tail, ending with figures of 5-20 off 10 overs.

Due to the excellent bowling performance, Tewin could only manage 100.

St Albans IVs truimphantly won against Old Finchleians on Sunday to progress into the next round of the county cup.

St Albans batted first, managing 250-9 off 50 overs, boosted by the performance of opening batsman, Martin Jones, with 73. In support, Goddard blasted his way to 50 alongside the defiant play of Aaron Jones with 35.

In response, the opposition failed to hunt down St Albans’ target, only reaching 182. Rajendran and O’Toole both toiled away efficiently, taking two wickets each.

Hall finished off the tail, picking up 3-36 in his spell, marking a comprehensive win for St Albans.
