Herts Senior Centenary Cup Second Round

Park Street Village 4 Codicote 1

MATT Newman scored a hat trick as Park Street Village progressed to the third round at the expense of second-placed Codicote. Newman's goals took his tally to 20 for the season and he now sits second in the goalscoring charts.

PSV blitzed their opponents, scoring four goals in the opening twenty minutes.

David Ross opened the scoring for PSV after a couple of minutes, calmly knocking the ball over the Codicote 'keeper.

Newman scored his first of the game minutes later, finishing from a tight angle following Chris Mack's cross.

Ross then slid the ball to Newman who beat the offside trap and fired past the Cod's goalkeeper and he completed his hat trick when he latched onto Chris McCarthy's pass and slotted the ball home.

Andy Ruck had a golden opportunity to make it five when he rounded the goalkeeper but he somehow managed to miss with the goal at his mercy.

PSV set out to frustrate Codicote in the second half by getting men behind the ball. The Cod enjoyed long spells of possession but were restricted to long-range efforts that never really tested Tony Kerby in the PSV goal. With 15 minutes to go, Lee Shackell was penalised by the referee for handball and Pete Duffy dispatched the spot kick past Kerby.

PSV boss Ryan Thompson was delighted with his side's performance. "The lads had the bit between their teeth. We played here a couple of weeks ago and we felt that some of the decisions went against us that day and they scored in the last minute so they had a point to prove. Matty Newman and Dave Ross were absolutely brilliant and they had no answer to them. We set out in the second half to frustrate them and get men behind the ball and they didn't threaten us."

Thompson now faces a selection dilemma. "The problem is I haven't got a clue what my best team is now. The young players like Dean Thompson, Andrew Murphy and James Hill are doing really well. It's a brilliant problem to have. We're undefeated in November and we've beaten some good team along the way."

PSV travel to Brache Sparta in the Anagram Records Trophy on Saturday with a place in the quarter finals up for grabs.

PSV: Kerby, Hurst, Wright, Petts, McCarthy, Burns, Ruck, Woodruff, Newman, Ross, Shackell. Subs: Thompson, Murphy, Hill, Ross.
