London Colney athlete finishes second at Welsh Indoor Open Championships
ATHLETICS: IT was a busy weekend for Stuart Thurgood from London Colney as he opened his 2012 athletics season with two indoor championships appearances in the shot put.
On Saturday he travelled to Cardiff to compete in the Welsh Indoor Open Championships and fired the 7.26kilo shot out to a new personal best of 13.26m which placed him second in the competition. On Sunday he was in action again in the South of England Indoor Championships held at the Lee Valley Athletics Centre in Enfield and set another personal best with a mark of 13.35m to take the bronze medal.
The 35-year-old school teacher will be travelling out to Finland in April to represent Great Britain in the World Masters Indoor Championships, and then has his sights set on the European Masters Championships in Germany in August where he will contest the hammer throw and weight throw events, alongside the shot put.
Thurgood is supported by the St Albans District Council Elite Athlete scheme and commented: “I am very grateful to the sports development team at St Albans Council for their help and support.”
