SKIPPER Anthony Muthusamy scored the goal to secure a fine point for Colney Heath at Harefield United on Tuesday.

Joint managers Scott Lacey and Wesley Awad set the Magpies up with a solid 4-4-2 formation, relying on the pace of Jake Parratt and the goalscoring prowess of Richard Howard in attack.

The Magpies were dealt a blow inside five minutes when a free kick whipped in by Harefield was allowed to bounce all the way through and into the back of the net. Lacey was less than impressed. He said: "The goal should never have stood. It was never a foul for the free kick."

To their credit, the Magpies shrugged off the early blow and responded in the second half with a restart of their own which result in the equaliser. A free kick delivered precisely by Neil Jordan found defender Muthusamy who netted to crown a fine display and make it 1-1 with 20 minutes left. Lacey praised his skipper. He said: "Anthony does what he does best. He is our skipper now and he put in a real skipper's performance. The goal came from a routine we have worked on in training."

Lacey last week called for his side to defend better and they responded by conceding only twice in two matches, both set play goals. He said: "We haven't let in a goal from open play in 180 minutes and that is something we can build on now. The draw with Harefield was a tremendous result. We edged the game but Harefield had the better chances. Tom Blackman made a couple of good saves but we dominated the play. It was a really good display.

"We set up to try and hit them on the break with the pace of Jake Parratt and they had no answer to Jake and Richard Howard, who tested them all 90. It was very encouraging to see the team bounce back from Saturday. We are strong. It is a big game on Saturday (against St Margaretsbury) and we are looking for all three points. I believe we are a top-six team and we will get there."

At Kingsbury London Tigers on Saturday the Magpies fought hard but went down to a second half penalty.

Defender Muthusamy had the best effort to snatch a point for the Magpies but saw his header saved. Lacey said: "We went with a 4-5-1 and were a little bit more defensive. At half time things had gone our way but then we gave away a penalty which was a penalty."

The Magpies face St Margaretsbury at the Recreation Ground on Saturday with a 3pm kick off. They host Hertford Town with a 7.45pm kick off on Tuesday.
