Despite having to battle through snow blizzards to get to their venue, Harpenden Badminton Club's men's team continued their winning form with a 7-2 triumph over Comets on Tuesday night.

The match, played at the Hertfordshire University sports hall, got off to a good start for the first pairing of Roger Lever and Ben Chai who took their first match 21-18, 21-12 and never looked like conceding a game in any of their remaining matches. Second pairing of captain Chris Holland and Phil Chan also got off to a winning start 21-11, 21-18 but had to take their other games to three, winning one 21-13, 13-21, 21-13 and losing the last 22-20, 8-21, 22-20. The third pairing of Guru Lota and new signing Jesson Chan took a while to find their feet, losing their first game 21-23, 10-21 but then hit form to win their next two games 21-17, 21-18 and 21-5, 21-13. Overall, another good result for Harpenden who are defending their title from last year.

l Following in the footsteps of the mixed and the men's teams, the ladies' team started the season with a victory, claiming a convincing win over Gadebridge at Lockers Park. First pair, Karen Patterson and Carole Lowe, won all three of their games in confident style. Captain Charlotte Rogers and Jenny Giddings, Harpenden's second pairing, won their first two games but unfortunately lost their final game to Gadebridge's first pair in a close encounter. Newly formed third pair of Polly Hipkin and Lucinda Mileham also won two out of their three games, losing to the first pair 21-16, 29-27, 21-17, unluckily losing the middle game in a marathon battle.

An excellent start to the season and a step in the right direction to defending the league title that was won last season.
