Paul McGrath’s second place in Luton Cycling Club’s Neil Gardner Memorial Road Race on Saturday was the highlight of yet another good week for Verulam ReallyMoving.com racing team.

The 67-mile race took place over seven laps of a circuit around Great Barford in warm but windy conditions.

McGrath had been active right from the drop of the flag.

He jumped into an early break in the first mile and held his own for 25 ferociously quick miles.

That was brought back but after one lap of recovery he went off again, this time taking two others with him and establishing a 45-second gap.

Directeur Sportif Marcel Six took the decision at this point to save James Hedley-Smith, Clay Davies and Luke Houghton in case of a bunch sprint and left the work of disrupting and covering rival attacks to himself and Andy Whale.

The front three stayed away and McGrath, while beaten for the win, took a very credible second and victory in the sprints competition.

Also on Saturday Michael Parry secured fifth place in the elite, first, second and third category race at Hog Hill.

That gave him 14 more national points for the team and a guaranteed national championship entry.

He then went on to deliver a strong performance in the Junior Mens CiCLE Classic in Melton Mowbray on Sunday.

But unfortunately despite his valiant efforts, a combination of mechanical problems and crashes in the field ahead left him just outside the points at the finish.

A few days earlier Six, supported by team-mates Gary Nugent, Gavin Bench and Whale, won round six of the Hemel Hempstead CC Bovingdon Bomber Criterium.

The team manager jumped clear on a solo breakaway, maintaining a gap of 15 seconds to the finish line.

It was also a good week for Verulam Reallymoving’s youths, with Jamie Maxen taking second place in the youth two scratch race on the track at Gosling Velodrome in Welwyn Garden City.

He also took second in the youth two pooints race at the same event.
