St Albans’ mayor helped Batchwood Hall Bowling Club launch into spring when he bowled the club’s first wood of the season on Saturday.

After the first wood was bowled by Cllr Geoff Harrison club members played a celebratory ‘spider’ on the bowling green at Batchwood Sports Centre.

Cllr Harrison said: “I am very pleased to welcome the coming of spring by bowling the first wood of the season at such a friendly sporting club. Thank you to all the members for making me feel so welcome and for kindly allowing me to take part.

“St Albans District is fortunate in having such high-quality bowls clubs where players can enjoy friendly and competitive games. I encourage people of all ages considering taking up an active, sociable pursuit to contact one of the district’s clubs and find out more about this fun game.”

The club was set up more than 50 years ago, first bowling on a green that is now the site of the Drovers Way Car Park. In 1966, the club relocated to Batchwood Hall where the council built a green and clubhouse on land that was then an orchard. After a fire at Batchwood in 2011, St Albans City and District Council re-built the clubhouse and re-laid the green.
