FOOTBALL: ONE of St Albans City Youth’s young coaches has had his work recognised at the Hertfordshire Football Association’s Community Awards.

Eighteen-year-old Matt Wyatt was awarded the Young Coach of the Year award for 2011, the third time someone from the club has won the award.

Matt is a product of the St Albans Young Coaches Scheme, a scheme that sees sixth form students encouraged to perform leadership roles in their school and in the community through sport. He and fellow coach Charlie Boswell started a new U10s team at St Albans City Youth last season and he developed the young group as the season went on and under Matt’s guidance ended up winning their league. He also took it upon himself to get four other youngsters involved in coaching and to act as role models in the local community.

City Youth club coach Stu Fennell said: “Matt deserves his success. In the last 12 months he has put in over 200 hundred hours of coaching at his school, the club and during school holidays. I asked him to prepare a speech for our Presentation Evening on the importance of a coach being positive.”
