A leading coach from St Albans has been named Coach of the Year at the British Judo Association’s (BJA) awards ceremony.
Marshalswick Judo Club’s Doug Seabrook picked up the award at the glittering event held in Nottingham.
He beat off competition from Pete Whitfield of South Brent Judo Club, Julie Jolliffe (Hollesley Judo Club) and Samantha Chraniuk (Micklefield Judo Club).
His nomination, which came from David Larbet read: “As head coach, Doug Seabrook faced the task of getting the club to what it is today; a vibrant positive community club, marked and accredited by the BJA.
“With the help of others within the club, he always thanks the members who help him and never takes credit for himself.
“The level of commitment he gave to make this happen cannot be underestimated and far exceeded what could be reasonably expected from him. Doug Seabrook’s approach was relentless; he took things by the scruff of the neck and led from the front.
“It was down to his personal effort that numbers rose from a mere handful to become a viable and performing club.

“Typically, his leadership and enthusiasm has meant that his club have adapted to change and members of other clubs have joined MJC, as well as [those] who come to get extra judo training.
“Doug’s performance has been exemplary. The results speak for themselves and his infectious enthusiasm, commitment and ability to ‘make it happen’ are an inspiration to others.
“His achievement, personal commitment and all round contribution make him a worthy candidate for Service to Sport or Community Coach of the Year.”
