St Albans City joint managers James Gray and Graham Golds steered their side to within one game of either the Conference North or South after a breathtaking 4-2 away win over Cambridge City last night (Wednesday).

The Saints took control of the game with an early goal from John Frendo and Steve Wales doubled the euphoria with a second soon after.

Cambridge hit back with a sublime volley from Danny Kelly just before half-time, but Ben Martin headed St Albans back into a two-goal lead at the start of the second period.

An unbelievable reaction save from Paul Bastock kept the score at 3-1 until Adam Marriott, the division’s top scorer, netted with a superb drive.

The game was put beyond doubt with a piece of individual brilliance from Sam Corcoran as St Albans booked a place in Monday’s play-off final away to Chesham United, kick-off 3pm.

“One more game,” said Gray in his post-match interview.

“I’m really looking forward to Monday’s game. It’s all geared up to be a massive game.”

If the final is anything like this game, then the fans are in for another treat.

“It had a little bit of everything,” said Gray.

“It was end-to-end, we got away from them and then they came back at us, we got away again and they came back again and little bit of brilliance at the end took it completely out of their hands.

“Overall, I think we deserved it. But it was a tense game to be involved it; it ebbed and flowed but it’s why we’re in football; I loved it tonight. The fans were immense and the players gave us everything; you can’t ask for more than that.”

He added: “We came out of the blocks fast and a great pass from Wales for Frendo and a great finish settled us. We scored another goal soon after and then we hit the bar which would have put us three up…there’s so many things in the game it’s hard to recall them all.

“Corkers last bit of brilliance gave me a bit of relief of the side.”

With so much on the line, Gray was proud to see his players deliver in the biggest game of the year…so far.

“I’m really proud of the whole squad,” he said.

“They left everything out there and that’s what you need to win play-off semi-finals. We need another performance like that on Monday.

“We’re one game away. My heart is beating.”
